Marek Hamsik reflected on his time at Napoli, the current work of Luciano Spalletti and his squad and what he regrets from his time in the Campania capital.

The Slovakian midfielder spent almost 12 years with the Partenopei from 2007 to 2019, leaving for Chinese outfit Dalian Yifang. During his time with the club, Hamsik made 520 appearances across all competitions, scoring 121 goals and providing 103 assists, becoming their all-time record appearance holder in the process.

Speaking to DAZN, Hamsik first revealed how much he still misses Napoli after leaving three years ago.

“I miss everything about Napoli. It’s a mixture of beautiful things: the people, the sea, the food…. Some new players, during the first days, were scared of the city, only to fall in love with it.”

He gave his thoughts on the work of Spalletti and his squad this season.

“The team is doing excellent things. They started well like last year, but this time I see them more convinced.

“Khvicha Kvaratskhelia? I must admit, I hardly knew him myself at first, but he actually has extraordinary numbers.”

The Slovakian midfielder touched on some memories he has of Ezequiel Lavezzi and Edinson Cavani.

“I remember that when he came to Napoli he was a bit overweight, but he soon recovered. Edinson Cavani was a crazy professional, he trained more than the others and alone, when he lost he went crazy.”

He commented on how it felt to break Diego Maradona’s goal record with the club.

“For me it was an indescribable emotion, which I will carry with me all my life.”

Finally, Hamsik revealed what regrets he still holds from his time with Napoli.

“To have come second three times. Winning a league title, you know, is really a league title.”
