Marek Hamsik admits his rapport with Rafa Benitez was frosty, but has “no doubts” on his Napoli future.

It seems few were particularly sad to see the Coach leave for Real Madrid after finishing the Serie A season in fifth place.

“The goodbye to Benitez was normal, with a professional handshake. I am not angry with him, but next season I hope to have more playing time,” Hamsik told Slovak reporters on international duty.

“It was a sad campaign. We failed in the semi-finals of the Europa League and Coppa Italia, then went missing for the decisive Champions League game with Lazio.

“Obviously that hurts and we are well aware that we didn’t do everything in our power. We are disappointed and it matters little to me that I set a personal record for goals and assists. What really matters is the team.”

Hamsik had difficulty with Benitez, particularly when dropped for some of the big games.

“I always want to play and being on the bench certainly couldn’t make me happy. I behaved as a professional and the rapport with the Coach was professional. It was normal.

“I have no doubts on my future. On June 15 I will go on vacation, then in July pre-season training with Napoli.

“I don’t know what will happen with the new Coach, but I read in the papers that Aurelio De Laurentiis is trying to convince Unai Emery.”
