The former striker was invited to join the Roma board by the club’s American President James Pallotta, after Hamm had spoken about her connection to Rome – her parents moved to the Italian capital after she finished high school, and she used to visit twice a year.
“It was perfect timing because it was during the World Cup there [Italy] in 1990,” Hamm explained to Sports Illustrated.
“Roma was the team I was able to watch on TV all the time when I was there.
“They were the colours I’d see all over the city, and it was one of the clubs I paid attention to in Serie A.”
Pallotta also spoke to Sports Illustrated and praised Hamm’s in-depth knowledge of the sport, insisting she is far more knowledgeable than himself.
“The potential of having Mia on the board of Roma to me was a no-brainer. What she’s forgotten about football over the last 30 years I still have to learn.”
