Udinese’s sporting director has affirmed faith in Francesco Guidolin and defended fans who confronted Antonio Di Natale and Maurizio Domizzi.

The Zebrette were hit with a 3-2 defeat at home to 10-man Lazio in Sunday lunchtime’s kick-off, to leave them after Week 20’s other results just three points above the relegation zone.

For their sporting director, though, any talk of Coach Francesco Guidolin coming under scrutiny is wrong.

“Is he at risk? Absolutely not,” Cristiano Giaretta has told Tuttomercatoweb this Monday.

“The club have not spoken to or about Guidolin except to give him support and help in believing in the project.

“Only he can help us get out of this, with the support of the whole club.

“Yesterday we experienced a bitter and rare event, to concede three goals against a team with 10 men.

“It means that something did not work, but we were also penalised by a penalty that was perhaps a bit too generous.

“But we are an important team and we can turn this around.”

Fans confronted Antonio Di Natale and Maurizio Domizzi in the car park after the game, preventing them from leaving before talking through the defeat with them.

“These things are normal for me. It is legitimate to request a meeting with the players that best represent the team and it is fair to meet.

“The players are always pushing, they do so every day during the week and then on Sundays.

“Now I hope that this is the end of our errors – we have to play like a team that needs to save itself and for this we need substance.

“It is not easy to be there, but it is part of our job and we will adapt mentally to the position. We have the level of players who know what to do in these cases.”
