According to reports in Italy, Newcastle United and Sunderland are both hoping to tempt Lazio midfielder Matteo Guendouzi back to the Premier League in January.
There had already been some suggestions that Sunderland and Aston Villa were looking towards the France international.
Now they have been joined in that particular race by their local rivals, Sunderland, according to Tuttomercatoweb transfer reporter Marco Conterio.
Guendouzi wanted by Premier League clubs

The 26-year-old initially came to Lazio on loan in the summer of 2023 from Olympique Marseille, then completed the transfer 12 months later for a total cost of €14m plus add-ons.
It is reported that Lazio would request €25-30m for a sale, especially in the January transfer window, when it is more difficult to find a suitable replacement.
This is also because they owe Olympique Marseille a 10 per cent cut of the fee as part of that original agreement.

Guendouzi is under contract with the Aquile until June 2028 and made nine Serie A appearances so far this season, contributing one goal and one assist.
He is no stranger to the Premier League, having played for Arsenal from 2018 to 2020.
