More and more reports in Italy claim Roma are a likely destination for Leonardo Bonucci although the Giallorossi could also get Trevoh Chalobah or Jakub Kiwior.

La Gazzetta dello Sport and Calciomercato.com claim Bonucci could join Roma on a free transfer from Union Berlin in January.

The Italian defender joined the Bundesliga side last summer but would be happy to return to Italy, and his club could terminate his contract in January to ease a transfer to the capital.

José Mourinho expects reinforcements at the back next month as Chris Smalling and Marash Kumbulla have been injured for several months while Evan N’Dicka will play in the Africa Cup of Nations in January.

Roma must deal with a tight transfer budget, so they can’t spend big on any new signing and this is a reason why the signing of Bonucci would be ideal for the Giallorossi.

According to Gazzetta, however, Flamengo could provide a little cash injection by paying €4-5m for Roma loanee Matías Viña, now at Sassuolo.

The Giallorossi may need more than one new central defender in January, so they remain interested in Chelsea’s Chalobah and Arsenal’s Kiwior. The latter has also been linked with a move to Milan in the winter transfer window.
