Fabio Grosso maintains Atalanta “pounced” on signs of Brescia weakness and fear. “They proved themselves to be a level above us.”

The Rondinelle are in disastrous form, losing six matches in a row, while they failed to find the net in any of Grosso’s three games in charge, conceding 10 goals.

“It’s certainly not easy, as we had a sense of fear and when these opponents see fear, they take advantage,” Grosso told Sky Sport Italia after a 3-0 defeat.

“I liked the response in the second half, as we were more aggressive and had opportunities to equalise. Unfortunately, when make errors, you do pay a price for that.

“I haven’t been here for long and know it takes hard work to achieve something. Atalanta proved themselves to be a level above us today, but we need to eliminate those naïve errors that are gifts to the opposition.

“Now we have a run of game coming up against teams more in our area of the table. I think if we play the way we did in the second half, then we can have our say.

“I know what the priorities are, but those things aren’t so easy in the circumstances. We keep paying a heavy price for individual errors and Atalanta pounced right on them to close the game.

“I believe in these lads and the Serie A standard has improved a great deal this season. We are trying to do everything we can.”
