Roma need to go back on the market after Georginio Wijnaldum’s fractured tibia, so their options include Florian Grillitsch, Jean-Victor Makengo of Udinese or Sassuolo’s Davide Frattesi.

The Netherlands international managed only one appearance off the bench against Salernitana after his transfer from Paris Saint-Germain, on loan with option to buy, before this shock setback.

He was diagnosed with a fractured tibia following a training session collision last night and is expected to undergo surgery this week.

That could rule Wijnaldum out for three months, so Roma are searching for another addition in midfield.

The cheapest option would be Grillitsch, who is a free agent, but he already tried and failed to negotiate personal terms with Fiorentina, Lecce and Brighton and Hove Albion.

It remains to be seen if the former Hoffenheim talent will fit the Roma wage structure.

Looking within Serie A, there’s always Udinese midfielder Makengo, whose asking price would be circa €9m, but could be available on loan with an option to buy.

The more expensive alternative is Frattesi, who had already been in advanced talks for a Roma move earlier in the summer before the €25m price-tag proved too much.
