Hoffenheim winger Vincenzo Grifo had his whole family in the stands to watch his Italy debut against the USA. “I am so happy!”
He was born in Germany to Italian parents and has always held on to his national identity, so jumped at the chance when called up by Roberto Mancini for this friendly.
“I am so emotional right now,” he told Rai Sport. “I am so happy to have played my first game with the Nazionale. I’m really pleased with the victory and it’s a great day.
“My family was here (in Genk): parents, wife, brothers. I haven’t looked at my phone yet, but I imagine there are a few messages.”
His performance coming off the bench was impressive, so does Grifo think he did enough to earn another cap?
“I don’t know. I think the team played really well and we’re very happy about the result. The Coach makes the decisions, but obviously it’s normal a player wants to return again.”
