Freiburg forward Vincenzo Grifo has four senior Italy goals and assures he will ‘always do anything’ to represent his country, even if call-ups are rare.
Born and raised in Germany to an Italian family, the 29-year-old attacking left winger made only his seventh senior appearance for the Azzurri, yet found the net four times.
“It was against Estonia last time and now again. I thank the team, because without their support, you can never score these goals. I am happy,” Grifo told RAI Sport after scoring twice in the 3-1 win in Tirana.
He had bagged another brace in the 4-0 friendly win over Estonia in November 2020.
“It’s a splendid feeling, because playing for these colours always gives me such pride. I will always do anything I can to be here with these great players.”
He earned this call after impressing at Freiburg this season with 11 goals and three assists in 23 competitive games at club level.
“My teammates give me a lot of support and affection. Things are going well for me at the moment and I hope they can continue like that.”
Grifo’s characteristics also suit the change of system from Italy this evening, although he has a different way of describing their 3-4-3 approach.
“We moved to 5-2-3 with everyone pressing high. Albania are a very strong team, but we were well-prepared and very happy with the win.”

Grifo is having an excellent season and was rewarded with being back. A shame that he was one of the last cuts for Euro 2020. What’s more he represents the diaspora.
Should be a starter for euro qualifiers very smooth player.
If Mancio doesn’t move Chiesa over to the Left (which he should!), then I agree. Prefer Grifo over Pessina.
Then there is also Pellegrini to contend with.
Mancio needs to navigate this well.
