Gravina sticks to the algorithm

Serie A is set to return on June 20 and the Coppa Italia closes in on confirming play on June 12 and 13, with the Final on June 17.

The FIGC chief has been instrumental in the process but some of his hypotheses and decisions have been met by heated debate, the latest case has been the opposition of a proposed algorithm to settle the score in case of another stop.

“Our goal is to assign the verdicts of this championship on the pitch,” he reassured in an interview with Il Mattino.

“I have always maintained that changing the format during the season would have been necessary if the conditions for the restart had not been met.

“Instead, we are very close to this goal, it’s correct to play all the scheduled games. A lot of noise has been raised about it [the algorithm], without even knowing what it’s about.

“We don’t want to call it that? Let’s call it the criterion for the definition of the inspired ranking sports merit.

“If the championship stops once again, I don’t think it’s right to, for example, freeze the table without taking into account the remaining games, as some clubs have perhaps played less games than others.

“It will be inspired by fairness and common sense.”

Regarding the possibility of letting fans into the stadiums this summer, Gravina added: “I hope so. By improving the progress of the infections, I hope we can allow partial access to football stadiums.

“It would be an extraordinary injection of trust and enthusiasm.”
