FIGC President Gabriele Gravina has confirmed that the Italian federation have put their trust in Luciano Spalletti, who is not expected to leave his position as head coach of the national team, despite Italy’s exit from EURO 2024 at the round of 16 stage on Saturday evening.

Both Spalletti and Gravina are conducting press conferences from the national team training base in Iserlohn in Germany on Sunday morning.

Gravina, who also faces an uncertain future with FIGC elections scheduled for March 2025, confirmed that there were lengthy discussions with Spalletti after the Switzerland loss on Saturday.

He did, however, state that it would be ‘unthinkable’ to dismiss Spalletti less than a year after his appointment.

Gravina puts trust in Spalletti

“We have nothing to hide, but we must continue to take responsibility. There was a long chat with the coach yesterday and I think that it is unthinkable to solve the problems by abandoning a multi-year project after eight to nine months,” Gravina told the media at the beginning of his press conference in Germany on Sunday.

“Central to our project is a coach who has been here for nine to 10 months, who has not always had all the players available. Our trust has to work as there is already a new challenge in 60 days’ time.”

Italy will next be in action against France in the Nations League on September 6.

  1. Personally the correct decision, which I belive will come to fruition but it’s one of faith at a position of rock bottom. It’s a brave decision but time is the best story teller and We Are All Italians, whether living in Italy or not and wether by Italian sounding name ir not. Forza Italia

  2. this is wrong decision. I was supporting Spalletti , he had a good career, but obviously it does not work. He is not a good fit. 9 months is not that short period of time, Italy is playing sooo bad. These players are absolutely better individually than Switzerland and Croatia. So it’s the management issue. Bring in Maurizio Sarri.

  3. I don’t get it, He is a stubborn Coach. He played De Loranzo all mins in Euro. He was cleared the worst Italian right back of this tournament.

  4. While i do believe in giving the coaching staff time to establish themselves, the lackluster performance in the Euros is an indication the team is not where it needs to be. Spalletti did great things for Napoli, but on the international stage the stakes are higher than the club. Four games played with three goals scored and five conceded, and they were behind in every game. Wrong direction, wrong coaching, wrong squad. He needs to go.

  5. He radiates the aura and energy of a relegation fighting coach. Has never looked like a coach fit for italy.

  6. 1st reverse vs Schweiz since 93. 1st competitive reverse vs England since 97. Spalletti is worse than Ventura.

  7. How can you confirm a coach who in 9 to 10 months has made the team considerably weaker instead of improving it.

    Goodbye another World Cup 👋
