Robin Gosens said Atalanta are “used” to play at San Siro and has claimed there are “big expectations” ahead of the Inter match this weekend.

The German wingback looks forward to play against “a very strong squad” and pointed out the “challenge” Atalanta face in Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez ahead of the big match at the Giuseppe Meazza this weekend.

“It will be a match between the two teams that run the most,” he told Bergamo TV. “They have a very strong squad, even without [Nicolo] Barella and [Milan] Skriniar. They’re in very good shape.

“It will be big expectations ahead of the game. Both teams have great attackers. [Romelu] Lukaku is very difficult to mark, whilst [Lautaro] Martinez moves a lot. They are doing extraordinary stuff; it will make it a tough challenge.

“Our defenders are doing well, let’s see how it goes. We played at San Siro in the Champions League; we are used to that pitch.”

Gosens has received a lot of praise for his performances this term and said he has been helped by Gian Piero Gasperini’s high expectations of the wingbacks.

“It’s not an easy role, it takes some time to do well,” he said. “The coach asks a lot from the players out wide, but this is the result of hard work.

“It’s a way to grow, I’m happy it’s going so well. I also have a bigger personality when I know Gasperini has faith in me. I’m a starter, that’s very important.

“Last year, I was afraid of making a mistake, now I’m going because I know I can do it. It changes a lot.”

Atalanta are currently one point behind Roma at fourth in the table and despite back-to-back 5-0 wins against Milan and Parma respectively, Gosens expects a tough battle for the Champions League spots.

“If we get to the Europa League, it’s still a big deal,” he added. “It’s normal that we have a desire to play in the Champions League, but the Europa League is also a good result in my opinion.

Lazio are doing incredible stuff; they too are fighting for Europe. Roma, with their squad, need to aim for Champions League.

Gosens also said Atalanta are trying to win the Coppa Italia and points at the cup as another route to the Europa League.

“Also last year, we reached the Final and we know what it means to play in it,” he said. “It’s the shortest way to get into Europe. The cup is very important.”
