Robin Gosens admits his performance for Germany against Portugal was ‘unforgettable’ and he didn’t ask Cristiano Ronaldo for his shirt this time.
The Atalanta wingback received a standing ovation after the 4-2 victory, having scored, provided two assists, helped create another goal and seen an early volley disallowed.
“I don’t know where to start!” Gosens told Sky Sport Italia.
“It is certainly an unforgettable night for me. We beat a truly strong team and I got my first goal in this tournament, as well as an assist. I am happy and proud.
“We knew that we’d have to win today, because if we lost here then it’d become really difficult to qualify. We tried to give everything both in attack and defence. I’m happy we won the match.”
A few months ago, Gosens famously admitted he had asked Ronaldo to swap shirts after a game between Juventus and Atalanta, but CR7 blanked him.
His Dea teammates played a prank by presenting him with a brand-new Ronaldo jersey in the locker room instead.
Did he ask the Ballon d’Or winner for his shirt this time and will he be remembered?
“I didn’t ask him for his shirt, as I want to enjoy the victory and this evening,” replied the German.
Remarkably, this was only his seventh cap for Germany, as he made his debut in 2020, having waited for them to call and held off an approach from the Netherlands – where he has shared citizenship.
Already linked with Inter and Juventus, his price-tag will surely have increased after this evening, so does Gosens have a message for the Atalanta supporters?
“I want to tell the Atalanta fans that I love you and we’ll see each other soon.”
