Maxime Gonalons has effectively ended Napoli’s pursuit for him, by indicating his desire is to stay at Lyon for the long term.

The midfielder was the subject of January negotiations between the Ligue 1 outfit and the Vesuviani, only for those to break down at the last moment.

Whilst talks were reported as having reopened in recent weeks and even seen as close to completion, the player has now commented that a move once more looks unlikely.

“I reflected about this, I have heard much talk about my farewell,” Gonalons has considered to Le Progres.

“But not all the details have been fulfilled and we have never discussed the contract or salary with Napoli.

“Napoli was the team that really wanted me. I have had Rafa Benitez express his willingness that I transfer there.

“It was very flattering, because Napoli are a great club and for a year they have pushed for me.

“But let’s not forget that at Lyon there is a long-term project with a new stadium and many young players.

“I’m under contract until June 2016 and perhaps we will discuss an extension.

“I hope that my position might encourage the fans and my teammates to do the same. If we continue to grow together we can do great things.”
