Alejandro ‘Papu’ Gomez praised Atalanta for “never giving up” in a 3-2 win over Hellas Verona, as they now go into a “Champions League Final with Shakhtar Donetsk.”
The Orobici were twice a goal down at home to Verona today, but kept coming back and won it in stoppages through defender Berat Djimsiti.
“We expected it to be this tough, as we knew Verona were difficult to break down, strong technically and physically, but we never gave up. It was a great second half performance and fortunately we turned it around,” the captain told Sky Sport Italia.
“Marco Silvestri did really well in goal, he denied me three or four times, but the important thing is that we got the three points!
“Verona are similar to us, they run hard and go into individual duels all over the park, so it was very tough and we’re happy with the result.”
Atalanta can now reach the Champions League Round of 16 if they beat Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.
“We really believe in our chances, we’ll take it on as a Champions League Final, in or out. We’ll go there and give our all to win, playing in the Atalanta style with technique, physicality and everything.
“It’ll be quite cold there, but not that much worse than Bergamo.”
