Former Serie A striker Hernan Crespo has crowned Fiorentina for their swoop of German international Mario Gomez.

During a summer which has seen Gonzalo Higuain join Napoli, Carlos Tevez and Fernando Llorente sign for Juventus, the Argentine thinks the Viola have done something special by landing the Bayern Munich man.

“I’m not saying that Juventus’ capture of Tevez is normal, but we are more accustomed to seeing such operations carried out by a club of the level of the Bianconeri,” Crespo, an ex-striker, told TMW.

“Purchasing a player like the former striker of Bayern Munich, a man who is in the prime of his professional maturity and who comes off the back of a season which saw him win everything, is something very different.

“During the past few years the Viola had, primarily, grown players who then became champions such as Gabriel Batistuta and Manuel Rui Costa.

“But signing someone like Gomez is something major.”

The 28-year-old is understood to have cost the Tuscan giants an initial transfer fee of €15.5m. That could rise if certain bonus clauses are met.

The now 38-year-old Crespo endured a fine career in Italy with the likes of Parma, Lazio, Inter, Milan and Genoa.
