The former Atletico Madrid defender joined Cagliari from Inter last summer, after only one season with the Nerazzurri.

“Six months ago, Pepe Herrera suggested me to join Cagliari because it’s a place where Uruguayan players are loved,” Godin told LA Gazzetta dello Sport.

“I signed a two-year contract and If we survive, I’d like to respect it. It was hard at the beginning. Now I want to give more. I feel well now.

“The situation at Inter was not easy, but we came close to winning. We finished runner-ups in Serie A and we reached the Europa League final. Inter hadn’t played a European Final for ten years.”

What didn’t work?

“You should ask Marotta, Ausilio and Conte. It was the coach’s decision [to sell him]. I had signed a three-year deal.”

The 35-year-old defender clashed with Ibrahimovic during Cagliari-Milan in January.

“I don’t love who lacks respect, but it was a funny scene,” Godin revealed.

“He insulted me in his language, and I insulted him in mine. These things happen on the pitch."
