Former referee Paolo Bertini says Roma's goal at Udinese should have been ruled invalid, but he still deplores the use of goal-line officials.

The Giallorossi opened the new year with controversy after defeating Udinese 1-0 with a contested Davide Astori goal.

The Friulani’s Coach Andrea Stramaccioni ended the game questioning what goal-line officials are for, while Juventus director Beppe Marotta reminded Rudi Garcia not to forget the errors that go in his favour.

Now a former Serie A, UEFA and FIFA match official has added fuel to the fire, declaring to that the goal-line official's decision to disallow the goal should have been respected.

“It was something atypical, strange,” Bertini has told Tuttomercatoweb.

“At the point that you introduce the extra official and you give him the competency to decide if the ball went in or not, then you also have to respect his verdict.

“You can't really discern if it was a goal. But even allowing for the goal-line official's decision going the other way, I think [Marco] Guida should have respected his decision.

“I'd give a red card to whoever decided for goal-line officials. They don't solve any problem at all.

“In the first year they caused disasters, because the main referee leans on them for some decisions. Now I think this figure has been somewhat de-legitimised.”

Bertini, however, was more positive in assessing the handling of the Derby d’Italia.

“Juventus-Inter was directed coherently and with decision by the referee.

“Let's not forget that this is a difficult match for a thousand reasons and it has always been a source of polemics. The refereeing was positive.

“I'd forget about the single episodes, seeing the elbow clashes inside the box is never easy. It would be appropriate for the players to behave differently.

“[Luca] Banti was the best, he directed Juventus-Inter well.”
