Wilfried Gnonto looked back at his explosive few weeks with the Azzurri, his time with Inter and his favourite Nerazzurri player.

The 18-year-old Italian forward is a product of the Milanese club’s youth system but he left in July 2020 on a free transfer to join Swiss side FC Zurich in a bid for more regular first team minutes. The risk paid off and Gnonto has now scored 11 goals and provided eight assists in 61 first team appearances.

Speaking to Qui Stadio a Voi Studio, Gnonto first reflected on the recent international break and his debut goal for the Azzurri.

“I am a little sad about how the match went, but these are things that remain, the first goal in the national team I will always remember. I provided an assist on my debut against Germany and that was exciting too.”

He then commented on the transitional phase the Azzurri are going through at the moment.

“We are young guys, we have quality, we want to do well, it is clear that the national team is in a moment of revitalisation but we have the qualities to restart. We also have experienced players who can help us.”

The Italian teenager commented on his emotional state following such an exciting few weeks.

“I haven’t processed it yet, these are strong emotions, I’m calm, I try to read the newspapers less. I have my family who are always close to me, now I’m with friends, I’m relaxing and preparing for graduation.”

Gnonto looked back at his time with Inter and his decision to join FC Zurich on a free transfer.

“I was at Inter, I was always very happy, I was at home but at that time my family and I thought it was the best choice for us and for my career to leave.

“At the beginning it was difficult because Switzerland is another country, with a new language, a new team. Maybe if I had stayed here I would never have made it to the national team.”

He touched on if he’ll return to Inter one day in the future.

“In life you never know, I am an Inter fan, everyone knows…now I have to think about my career, make the right choices. One day you never know but at the moment I’m not thinking about it too much.”

Finally, Gnonto commented on which Inter player he likes the most.

“The Inter player I like most is Lautaro Martinez. I’ve even had the chance to train with him a couple of times and see him up close.”
