Italy have named their squad for the European Under-19 Championship, but Willy Gnonto and Giorgio Scalvini were not released by their clubs.

The Azzurrini are in Group A, where they will face Romania on June 18, Slovakia on June 21 and then France on June 24.

Qualification for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup will also go to the four semi-finalists plus a fifth team via the play-offs.

Coach Carmine Nunziata announced his list of 20 players for this tournament, but he won’t be able to count on Gnonto and Scalvini.

This is because their clubs, respectively FC Zurich and Atalanta, refused to release the players for this competition, having already let them play for the senior Italy squad during the Nations League this month.

There were concerns that Juventus might withhold Fabio Miretti, who played for the Under-21 side this month, but the midfielder will be part of the group.

He’ll miss the opening match with Romania due to suspension.

  1. Typical of clubs putting themselves first rather than the national team albeit at the U19 level. This disgraceful attitude has to change!
