Napoli sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli discusses the Scudetto – “we have the right to dream…”
The Partenopei went top of Serie A with a 2-1 win over Inter at San Paolo last night, and haven’t lost in any competition since August 23.
“We have the right do dream, we have to do so,” Giuntoli said as he gave a seminar at Università Parthenope.
“Napoli are a special team, the numbers prove it. We’ve allowed very few shots on our goal, and we’ve created a lot of scoring chances.

“That means we’ve found synergy and chemistry in the group.”
Giuntoli was addressing a business class at the University, and also spoke about the transfer market and the economics of football.
“If we do projections in football, €20m was paid for [Edin] Dzeko, €25m was paid for [Nikola] Maksimovic or [Alessio] Romagnoli, born in ’95.
“The Bosnian won’t ever be worth €20m at the end of his contract, and is projected to cost Roma €70m. Romagnoli, however, instead of spending could be considered an investment.
“Often the team who wins the transfer window Scudetto does not win the balance sheet Scudetto.
“The transfer market lasts throughout the year. If [Vincenzo] Montella had stayed at Fiorentina we’d have signed Matias Vecino.
“We had reached an agreement with Roberto Soriano, but the lad preferred Milan and that delayed everything, so in the end the deal didn’t get done.
“Naples is a fantastic place, we have to take advantage of the warmth of the people, exploit the potential of everything.”
Finally, Giuntoli discussed Camilo Zuniga and Jonathan De Guzman, who have been excluded from the Vesuviani squad.
“If someone transgresses the rules, they should be excluded from the group, because they’re automatically not part of it then,” the director told the students.
“Before the player, the man makes the difference and there are those who understand this and others who do not.
“The latter then have to leave for the good of the collective. A champion will be remembered for trophies won, that’s true, but you always win thanks to the group, not alone.
“[Coach] Maurizio Sarri and I are always united, decisions are made by mutual agreement.
“The will to win is based on a positive atmosphere, and projecting the desire to achieve that goal. There are 60 or 70 people [on the staff], and they’re all important.
“It’s essential that they’re treated in the same way as, for example, [Gonzalo] Higuain.”
