Napoli director Cristiano Giuntoli sees this Champions League trip to Rangers as ‘a very important step that can give us confidence and belief’ to build on the 4-1 win over Liverpool.

It kicks off at 20.00 UK time (19.00 GMT).

“I expect an intense match, with great difficulty and Napoli must play our football the way we have done in the other games,” Giuntoli told Mediaset Infinity and Sky Sport Italia.

“It’s not right to make comparisons with last season’s squad. We think that we operated well on the transfer market, bringing in quality players, creating a competitive team under the guidance of a great coach.”

There are joint pressures at play in Glasgow, because a win here would put Napoli three points clear at the top of their Champions League group, but they are also preparing for Sunday’s Scudetto showdown with Milan in Serie A.

This fixture was originally meant to be on Tuesday, but due to police being over-stretched by preparations for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral, it was moved to this evening and Napoli fans barred from making the journey.

“We must take it one game at a time, without thinking of alibis, even if we are up against a Rangers side that didn’t play at the weekend. With this match postponed, we will return home at 5am. As I said, no alibis, we just have to focus on putting in good performances.

“This match is a very important step that can give us confidence and belief. We will try to take the initiative straight away and bring home the result. I don’t expect our lads to be intimidated by the atmosphere.”
