Olivier Giroud underlined Milan’s goals for the coming campaign and gave his thoughts on new signing Christian Pulisic.

The 36-year-old French veteran played an important role for Stefano Pioli last season, being a relatively reliable source of goals, netting 18 in 47 games across all competitions. His work saw him earn a new one-year deal in the Lombardy capital.

With Zlatan Ibrahimovic hanging up his boots and retiring, Giroud has now taken on the leadership role in the Milan frontline and will alternate with new signing Noah Okafor.

Speaking to DAZN via Calciomercato.com, Giroud first discussed how it feels to return to Milan after their summer break.

“I missed the ball, I played with my children, but I’m happy to be back in training. It’s nice to see my teammates and also the new players who’ve arrived.”

He reflected on the departure of dressing room leader Ibrahimovic.

“I’m sorry he retired, we’ll miss him a lot. I try to be an older brother in the locker room, I try to help the younger players with my experience.”

The 36-year-old spoke about the team’s goals for the coming campaign.

“Our goal is to have the best possible season in the league and in the Champions League. It would be exceptional to win the second star. That’s our goal.”

He praised the qualities of star winger Rafael Leao, who recently penned a new long-term contract with Milan.

“He has exceptional qualities, he still has room for improvement, he can reach Mbappe’s level. He needs to improve his numbers, but the potential is there.”

He gave his thoughts on new signing Pulisic.

“He is a very fast player in tight spaces, he is also good in front of goal. He will certainly give something more to our team.”

Giroud spoke about Paolo Maldini, who was sacked as technical director last month.

“He was one of my favourite players when I was little. For me he’s the Italian class. He and the coach gave me the opportunity to play for Milan.”

Finally, Giroud discussed what lays ahead in his future.

“If I’m still here at 36, it’s because my body allows it. I have great motivation. I have a great spirit of competition. I am convinced that I can still lend a hand to the team.”

  1. I hope he signs for another season no problems. He is super fit still and has actually got better with age. Like a fine Italian Red Wine!
