Milan striker Olivier Giroud makes history as the oldest ever player to represent France at the World Cup, joined by Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot, but Theo Hernandez is dropped against Australia.

Their opening fixture in the tournament in Qatar kicks off this evening at 19.00 GMT.

With Ballon d’Or winner Karim Benzema injured for the entire competition, Giroud is promoted to the role of first-choice centre-forward.

At the age of 36 years and 53 days, he becomes the oldest ever player to represent France at a World Cup.

It is hardly a surprise, seeing as Giroud has scored nine goals and provided five assists in 19 competitive games for Milan so far this season.

He is joined in the starting XI by Juventus midfielder Rabiot, but his Milan compatriot Theo Hernandez is only on the bench.

Theo’s brother, Lucas Hernandez of Bayern Munich, does get the nod.
