Olivier Giroud’s winner against PSG was reminiscent of Mark Hateley’s iconic goal in a derby della Madonnina in 1984 and it was scored on the 62nd birthday of the ex-English striker.
Giroud has earned comparisons with ex-England international and Milan striker Hateley thanks to a goal scored against PSG on Tuesday which allowed Milan to win their first Champions League game this season.
A former striker for Rangers, QPR and Leeds United, among others, Hateley played for three seasons at Milan between 1984 and 1987, scoring 21 goals in 86 appearances.
The ex-English striker scored his most iconic Milan goal in a derby della Madonnina against Inter on October 28, 1984, beating Nerazzurri legend Fulvio Collovati with a towering header and helping the Rossoneri secure their first win against their city rivals in six years.
Giroud scored in a similar style on Tuesday and it was a sort of derby as well as the Frenchman beat ex-Inter centre-back Milan Skriniar to give Milan all three points against PSG.
Giroud even scored on Hateley’s birthday, as the former English striker turned 62 on Tuesday.
