Napoli have cancelled training on Saturday ahead of their Serie A clash with Genoa on Sunday as the Giro d’Italia has made it impossible to travel.

The Giro enters Stage 8 on Saturday, which takes place in Naples and means traffic disruption with several roads across the city closed.

“The players won’t train tomorrow [Saturday] due to the travel difficulties caused by the Giro d’Italia stage,” a Napoli training update read.

“The team will meet up in ritiro tomorrow night and will undergo the usual muscle training on Sunday morning.”

Luciano Spalletti’s side are likely to end the campaign in third place, though could mathematically still finish third or fifth.

Napoli had been on course to mount a serious title challenge but fell away in recent weeks following a disappointing run of results.

Earlier this week, a banner was raised outside the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium calling for Spalletti to leave in return for the restoration of his Fiat Panda which had recently been stolen.

The Napoli coach addressed the situation and joked it would depend on what condition the car is in.

Genoa, meanwhile, are 19th in the table and defeat would see them relegated if Salernitana or Cagliari win.

  1. “Luciano Spalletti’s side are likely to end the campaign in third place, though could mathematically still finish third or fifth”

It’s impossible for Napoli to finish 5th

Napoli could finish as high as 2nd, or as low as 4th

    So 2nd, 3rd or 4th – not 3rd or 5th

The 5th place team, Lazio, can finish the season on a maximum total of 68 points, Napoli already have 73
