Sebastian Giovinco is ‘very happy’ to be back in Serie A for Sampdoria until the end of the season, replacing injured Manolo Gabbiadini.

The Atomic Ant was a free agent since his contract with Al-Hilal expired in August 2021.

He hadn’t played club football in Italy since leaving Juventus for MLS club Toronto FC in February 2015, going on to Al-Hilal in January 2019.

“It’s all signed, I am very happy to be back in Serie A,” Giovinco told reporters outside the Sampdoria headquarters.

He already passed his medical this morning and put pen to paper on a deal until June 30.

“I salute the Samp fans, I can’t wait to get started with my first training session tomorrow.’

Having turned 35 last month, the former Juventus, Parma and Empoli player is back in Serie A after 190 appearances, in which he scored 40 goals and provided 38 assists.

Giovinco was called in to replace Gabbiadini, as the Sampdoria star will be out for the rest of the season after he was diagnosed with a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Gabbiadini had scored seven goals and provided four assists in 21 games for Sampdoria this season, between Serie A and the Coppa Italia.

  1. I like Giovinco & wish him well. I hope he makes Toronto FC regret the decision to not have him continue on with them in pre-season training.
