The Italy international won the award after a stunning debut season in North America in which he scored 22 goals and contributed 13 assists.

After receiving it last night, the 28-year-old spoke about his delight and the reported interest from Catalonia.

"I’m very pleased, however, being a team sport, it's nice to be able to win with all my team-mates,” he told Calciomercato.it

“I owe so much to Toronto because they allowed me to win this award and I will do everything to win it again both personally and with the team.

“Payback? I’m glad I made this choice and that’s the most important thing.

"I didn’t think about the criticism, I have always tried to enjoy myself. Sometimes I succeeded, but other times not, but I’m looking ahead on my path.

"Messi is the best in the world, I knew nothing of an offer. The interest makes me very, very happy.

“Next year? I don’t know, now I've finished this one, we’ll see about the next.”
