Giovinco agent: ‘Toronto FC just Insigne misdirection to get Napoli deal’

The agent who took Sebastian Giovinco to Toronto FC believes the reports of a contract worth €15m per season including bonuses to Lorenzo Insigne is ‘impossible, it seems like a misdirection to get a better deal out of Napoli.’

Multiple sources in Italy, Canada and America all maintain Insigne is ready to accept a free transfer to the MLS club, signing a five-year contract worth €11.5m per season plus another €4.5m in various bonuses.

It would make him the highest-paid Italian player in the world and follow in the footsteps of former Toronto FC fan favourite Giovinco.

However, Sportitalia transfer pundit Alfredo Pedullà remains sceptical on the agreement and believes Insigne is trying to use that interest to generate a more suitable move, or even a better offer of a contract extension from his beloved hometown club Napoli.

The same idea has come to Andrea D’Amico, the agent who negotiated Giovinco’s original move to Toronto FC in 2015.

“It’s difficult to comment on the Insigne situation, because to me it seems like a misdirection to get a better deal out of Napoli,” D’Amico told Radio Punto Nuovo.

“The idea of almost €15m per season is impossible, in my view it’s only a rumour. MLS is to be considered a serious option for Insigne, because I believe it will become an increasingly important league.

“We have to get used to a transfer market without borders, because what counts for a player now is his contract, his position on the pitch, lifestyle choices. The World Cup will be in America and Canada in 2026, so they have the infrastructure.”
