Genoa are confident that they will complete the signing of Alberto Gilardino from Fiorentina on Thursday.

The Marassi outfit have been looking for a new centre-forward and it seems as if they will get the Italian international – six months after making an initial and unsuccessful bid for his services.

“We have an agreement with Gilardino,” Rossoblu chief Enrico Preziosi noted. “All that is missing is the signature of Fiorentina.

“Perhaps Gilardino wanted a change of scenery and Fiorentina too. We want to take this opportunity and I think that Thursday will see the official signatures added.”

It’s understood that the former Milan man has accepted a four-and-a-half year contract worth €1.6m a campaign.

Fiorentina will net around €8m in terms of a transfer fee.

Genoa accelerated for Gilardino after initially making an offer to Amauri given his problems and contract situation at Juventus.

“Amauri was in our thinking, but he took his time to consider things and make a decision,” Preziosi added.

“We then pushed for Gilardino instead, where we gave our word to Fiorentina and the player.

“We believe a lot in Gilardino and we hope that there will be no unexpected problems at the last minute, but I don’t think there will be.”

Gilardino, 29, moved to the Viola in 2008 from Milan for €15m.

Fiorentina will now look to replace the ex-Parma man with possibly Amauri, Palermo’s Mauricio Pinilla, Parma’s Sergio Floccari or Maxi Lopez of Catania.
