When the striker opted to leave during the January transfer window, director Pantaleo Corvino stated “a light had gone out inside of him,” so there was no need for an unmotivated player to remain in Florence.

“As soon as I got to Genoa, my light has come back on,” smiled Gilardino. “The truth is I never ‘let go’ and for three years always gave my all to Fiorentina. I even rushed my comeback from a serious injury.

“I was aware of Genoa’s interest last summer, then decided to stay in Florence, but in December President Enrico Preziosi came forward again and this time managed to complete the operation. I thank him for putting so much faith in me.”

The Italian international has signed a five-year contract and chosen shirt number 82.

“It is the year of my birth and of course when Italy won the World Cup. I scored many goals for the Viola and experienced great emotions, as that is a unique city.

“I prefer to think of the present and this new challenge in the oldest club in Italy. I’ll play in a wonderful stadium, but want to enjoy every day of this adventure.

“I’m fired up and so eager to do well. I am coming off three months of being attacked by the media and by others, but will always remember the three and a half years spent in Florence.”
