The 31-year-old has been continually linked with a move away from Genoa since failing to find an exit in the summer, with Toronto listed since the autumn as preparing a €6m transfer fee and a three-year contract paying out a total of €7m.

Reports in Italy now, however, suggest that the former Milan and Parma man has said no to the offer, said to be in place for next June, out of his ambition to remain in Italy, or at least Europe.

Gilardino was asked for comment on the situation after netting in Genoa’s 2-0 win over Sassuolo yesterday: “My future? I am happy here, but I do not know what will happen.”
