Alberto Gilardino underlined how Genoa’s draw with Juventus ‘gives us confidence’ after a difficult run of matches.

The Rossoblu had only picked up one win in their five matches prior to the Bianconeri’s visit to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, failing to show the positivity they displayed in the early stages of the campaign.

Genoa performed well in their Friday evening clash with Juventus, conceding a first-half penalty from Federico Chiesa before netting an equaliser early in the second half, when an in-form Albert Gudmundsson poked the ball past Wojciech Szczesny after a quick burst forward.

Speaking to DAZN via TMW after the match, Gilardino first reacted to Genoa’s draw with Juventus.

“I had asked the boys this in recent days, to maintain their willingness to propose things and play. Tonight, the intention was to work on width, then in the second half I had to put weight up front, Ekuban worked for the team, and we deserved this draw and this performance against a great team.”

He was asked about Gleison Bremer’s last second chance.

“I tried not to think about anything. It can happen that we concede a goal at any moment of the match, lately it’s always happened to us in the last minutes. I knew, however, that we would play the game tonight and the boys deserved everything.”

The Genoa coach spoke about the growth of Ruslan Malinovskyi.

“I didn’t change his technical qualities but only his tactical approach, which was slightly different. At this moment in his career, working further away from goal could help him make a leap in quality.

“Tonight, he was indispensable for us, he gave an important performance, and the desire was to create the conditions to put Juventus in difficulty by playing the ball on the ground.”

Finally, Gilardino discussed Genoa’s differences at home and on the road.

“Reality says that because we are unable to collect away from home even if, by having good games, we didn’t get any points.

“We must think positively and keep our self-esteem high, there may be setbacks in the growth process. This result gives us confidence and is a breath of fresh air.”

Juventus have now lost ground in the Serie A title race and will be hoping Inter drop points in their Sunday evening clash with Lazio.
