Genoa coach Alberto Gilardino has confirmed that Italy striker Mateo Retegui is likely to be ruled out of the next two league matches, putting his availability for national team CT Luciano Spalletti in doubt ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers.

Retegui has been struggling with a knee issue sustained in September, and despite recently returning to action, he was substituted for precautionary measures after feeling a twinge in the first half against Salernitana last Friday.

The 24-year-old was not called upon for his team’s 2-1 win over Reggiana in the Coppa Italia Round of 32 on Wednesday.

Speaking in his post-match interview after the cup clash, Gilardino confirmed that Retegui will not be available for the weekend’s fixture against Cagliari, and that the following game against Hellas Verona is also unlikely.

Retegui’s situation is set to be monitored day-by-day, however, a lack of fitness and match sharpness could be an issue for Spalletti and Italy for the next international break.
