Club President Maurizio Zamparini was also present to meet the media, and explained the importance of Gilardino.

“He’s the first player I’ve ever personally presented, he has the spirit of someone in his 20s, and I hope he has a great season.

“I hope he can finish his career here as [Luca] Toni is doing [at Verona]. The transfer market was difficult, but we found Gilardino and a top lad in [Uros] Djurdjevic.

“[Franco] Vazquez and Gilardino are irreplaceable. I hope Gilardino can make it into the national team.”
