Milan club manager Christian Abbiati says Gigio Donnarumma was never considered for the Rossoneri captaincy.

The San Siro side opted to remove the armband from midfielder Riccardo Montolivo this summer, choosing to replace him with new signing Leonardo Bonucci.

Youngster Donnarumma, meanwhile, spent the summer embroiled in a bitter contract dispute with Milan and it appeared certain at one stage that he was set to leave the club.

The matter has since been resolved, but Abbiati believes the teenager is too young to have been handed the captaincy.

“I took the armband off Montolivo on the request of the club,” the former Rossoneri player commented.

“It was decided to make a change, a decision shared by everyone, and the club believes it has chosen a leader as captain of Milan.

“Donnarumma is 18 years old, he will become one of the best keepers in the world. I often speak to him and he has never mentioned the armband.”

Abbiati then discussed Milan’s encouraging start to the season, which has seen them win their opening Serie A match convincingly and qualify comfortably for the Europa League group stage.

“The other teams are playing well, with us it will probably need a little more time.

“But I must say that in this first phase of the season everyone has behaved well and put in great performances.”
