Marco Giampaolo trusts the first win of the season against Genoa can be a turning point for Torino. ‘This is a match we won with faith.’

This was a rescheduled Week 3 fixture, postponed last month due to the COVID-19 outbreak within the Genoa squad, decided 2-1 by Sasa Lukic and a Luca Pellegrini own goal.

“I simply tell my players how things really are,” Giampaolo told Sky Sport Italia after his first Serie A victory of the season.

“It’s not easy to have a certain attitude when you throw away results that were within your grasp for three games in a row. Psychologically, that is a difficult thing to get over.

“I say this is a match we won with faith. It means there is something credible in our rapport, otherwise, the team will abandon you.”

There had already been suggestions Giampaolo could be sacked if he didn’t win at Marassi.

“I always had positive sensations and you build team spirit in difficult situations. We are still under a train, though, so we need to rebuild our credibility one step at a time, working as a united group.

“When are surrounded by uncertainty, it’s difficult to react unless you have character and belief.”

Toro suffered a devastating defeat at the weekend, as they were 3-2 up against Lazio at the 93rd minute only to lose 4-3.

“I thought the team had a positive approach then too, but we were punished by crucial incidents. I can never be accused of lying to my players or being fake with them. I also never abandoned them. It is my strategy to be direct and real with them.”
