Marco Giampaolo defends Torino’s losing start to the season and some of his tactical choices. ‘The important thing is the lads don’t lose faith.’
The Granata have zero points after three matches played, including this afternoon’s 3-2 home defeat to Cagliari.
“Over 90-95 minutes, Toro did some good things, some not so good. The growth process means reading things collectively rather than individually,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.

The Granata have zero points after three matches played, including this afternoon’s 3-2 home defeat to Cagliari.
“Over 90-95 minutes, Toro did some good things, some not so good. The growth process means reading things collectively rather than individually,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“The result is unfairly damaging, the team deserved more, especially right now when confidence in what we’re doing could be decisive.
“Sasa Lukic had a really good game, in my view. I didn’t have any forwards available, so I needed to keep some options on the bench. Simone Verdi represented a different option, for example, and he had the chance to equalise at the end by firing over from the penalty spot.”
Giampaolo was asked if he was considering any changes to his usual 4-3-1-2 formation after these initial difficulties?
“Absolutely not, this is the system and the approach. We are just lagging behind in our process because we’ve been so inconsistent in our games, not playing for long periods due to various postponed matches. I trust when we are able to play and train consistently, we’ll see the improvements.
“These are three defeats, but the important thing is that the lads don’t lose heart or faith in the process. I don’t see any warning signs on that front. The regret is above all that we scored two goals in each of the last two games and still lost.”
Tomas Rincon is not exactly the deep-lying playmaker that Giampaolo tends to rely on in his teams.
“Rincon has his characteristics and can do more or less everything well. He’s not a natural playmaker, but he does it well enough. We have to make the most of his characteristics, as he can bring a game home, has character and his teammates look for him.
“We made some choices in the transfer market and had to decide where to invest the money, so we did it in attack. Rincon provided some guarantees and we had to make those choices.”
