“Despite previous defeats, or lack of success, Torino at least had performances that kept us afloat. I cannot say that today,” the coach told Sky Sport Italia.
“The first half was played in a very contracted way, anxious, doing the bare minimum. After the break, we reacted emotionally, instinctively when the game seemed to be over. And that wasn’t positive either.
“In the past, I said we won and lost due to details. This time, I say we deserved to lose and were not up to the task.”
Do Torino really have to start refocusing on this season as a relegation battle?
“The squad has better quality than a team that should be in the relegation zone. It doesn’t belong there, so if we are, it’s our own fault. We’ve been wasteful and it’s our responsibility.
“As I said, Toro had very good performances in the last five or six games, but I didn’t like the team today. If you don’t have even an ounce of courage, of character, then you’ll get nowhere.
“I have been working day and night on this aspect to get the team believing in itself, having a sense of responsibility. They only scored two goals in a minute because they thought the game was already lost.
“The main problem we have to solve is to get this team playing with confidence, without feeling this crushing pressure.”
Giampaolo was asked if he had any signs from President Urbano Cairo that his job might be in doubt.
“If the team is in this position, then it is my responsibility. I will keep trying to work and turn this situation around. I have an open rapport with the club, I have a training session tomorrow morning and that’s all I need to know.
“The President had dinner with us last night, he spoke to everyone and he is standing with us. We are the ones who need to take on more responsibility. It’s up to us now.”
