Sampdoria tactician Marco Giampaolo congratulated his team on beating Bologna 4-1 to end their five-round winless streak.

Fabio Quagliarella’s brace, Dennis Praet and Gaston Ramirez secured the victory at Marassi this evening.

“These are those classic games you feel ought to be won, but they’re never easy and my team did well not to get shaken up after Bologna’s equaliser,” the Coach told Radio Rai.

“Samp must always play good football, but it’s a result we needed to boost confidence. Quagliarella is improving all the time, while Gianluca Caprari and Gaston Ramirez were also in good shape and it showed.”

Giampaolo surprised by starting England Under-21 international Ronaldo Vieira.

“He is smart, has been working with us as a playmaker since he arrived here and needs to go through these steps in the growth process. It was a delicate match today, but you have to take risks and if someone does well in training during the week, I don’t hold back.”

Samp were in the running for a Europa League place until the final weeks of last season, so can they go one better?

“It’s a very balanced league with some surprising results and games can never be taken for granted. Our objective is to be consistent and then we’ll see, but I think it’ll be a very open campaign for everyone except Juventus.”
