“The penalty incident changes nothing, as we have to analyse the performance,” Giampaolo told Sky Sport Italia.

“We were not sharp, didn’t pass quickly enough and it was a far cry from our usual style of football. It was a balanced game on the goal we were naïve. Funnily enough, we’d worked on that situation this morning, trying to avoid the cross.

“We should’ve had more width, also to help Riccardo Saponara. He is extraordinary, but whether he makes it into the Italy squad depends on the system, as Antonio Conte doesn’t use a trequartista.”

Giampaolo surprised by starting 19-year-old striker Alessandro Piu, in his first senior football appearance.

“I chose him because Marko Livaja isn’t in shape yet and he worked well with Massimo Maccarone’s characteristics.”
