Sampdoria Coach Marco Giampaolo praised Luis Muriel for “the complete performance” after a 1-0 victory over Inter.

Fabio Quagliarella scored the only goal of the game at Marassi, but it was a breathless encounter that could’ve had many more.

“I told Muriel that when he runs and works for the team, he’s even better,” Giampaolo told Mediaset Premium.

“Today he put in the complete performance and is one of those players who can really change a game because he has quality, technique and pace.

“We had to be concentrated to the max this evening and the team gave a good response. It was a great performance from the collective.

“Last season Samp picked up 40 points, sold important players and bought youth, so naturally it’s going to take time and daily work in training to improve.”

Inter could well sack Frank de Boer so, being in a similar position a few weeks ago, does Giampaolo have any advice?

“As far as I’m concerned, Coaches are always under pressure. I have a lot of respect for myself and my work. The team has always given me positive signs and that is what a club needs to look for if it’s considering a dismissal.

“In order to play with a high line, you need to work on each situation to the centimetre, on winning back possession and assimilating all aspects of the approach, otherwise if the results don’t come then the players lose faith.”
