Fabio Quagliarella scored the two goals at the Stadio Paolo Mazza in this 2-1 victory.

“After our early goals, it got a bit chaotic, as SPAL had to fight back and so shook off the shackles to play in a more open and attacking fashion,” the Coach told Sky Sport Italia.

“We held out well and kept our heads in difficult circumstances. The forwards made the difference and we had numerous opportunities to get a third goal.

“We had to win, the pressure was on to get the result, but we are up there in the race for Europe and that makes us happy. Ronaldo Vieira had a great performance and I was very pleased with him.

“Riccardo Saponara is capable of seeing passes nobody else can, but with that he also drops out of the game occasionally. I know him and that’s inevitable.”

SPAL were furious after their goal was disallowed for a millimetrical Andrea Petagna offside, considered to be interfering with play.

“We knew before the game that VAR would take a bit longer than usual, as there were communication problems, but when the referee goes to the screen, there’s no point complaining. He can see it all, he makes his decision and nothing we say is going to change it.

“I much prefer this compared to when there were some incredible howlers before VAR was introduced.”
