This time, Toro held out for 120 minutes, capitulating only in a penalty shoot-out when Ciprian Tatarusanu parried the Tomas Rincon spot-kick.
“The team did well and the objective this evening was to be competitive,” Giampaolo told RAI Sport.
“I asked the team to play, because it’s the only way you have any chance of winning. We don’t have many great passers in the squad, but we tried our best and showed good character.
“It’s a pity to play 120 minutes and emerge empty-handed, especially as we have another game coming up on Saturday. I don’t like this fixture list, as we’ll have a fifth match in 13 days, especially one of them being extra time.
“Once you get to the shoot-out, anything can happen. We have never snubbed the Coppa Italia, but we do need to keep an eye on the next Serie A match, which is very important for us.”
Soualiho Meite was again not even on the bench and Giampaolo confirmed it was due to an imminent transfer, which may well be to Milan.
“Meite was not at our disposal today because he is on his way out.”
