Chievo’s Emanuele Giaccherini accepts his Italy career is probably ‘over’ but assures “I haven’t given up and I’ve never closed the door.”

Giaccherini has not played for Italy since Euro 2016, when they lost to Germany on penalties, although the 32-year-old could be set for a late renaissance at Chievo, having recently helped them to a first win since November.

“Going to Juventus means taking on responsibilities that you don’t have to at other clubs,” he told Corriere di Verona.

“Going to Juventus means taking on responsibilities that you don’t have to at other clubs,” he told Corriere di Verona.

“At Juventus, you must always work on every detail and can’t afford to make any mistakes, but they also give you a lot.

“They give you prestige and, in my case, being called up by your national team, winning something important and getting to the top.

“Winner against Cagliari? It was a long time coming, so it’s very significant, for the team too. We’d been on a delicate run of form and had to turn things around.

“In general, when you start losing games, you lose confidence and become anxious. Injuries also affect a team like ours, where it’s important to be at your best.

“The national team? I haven’t given up, but I think my time in Azzurro is over. Now it’s only fair that the youngsters are given a chance.

“I’ve never closed the door, but it’s very difficult. Still, you can never say never.”
