Rachid Ghezzal says he is delighted to have joined ‘a historic and mythical club’ in Fiorentina and that Serie A is ‘on par’ with the Premier League.

Ghezzal moved to Fiorentina on Monday, arriving on loan with a €10m option to buy and something to prove after an indifferent spell at Leicester City, where was burdened by Riyaz Mahrez comparisons.

“I signed right at the end of the window and Monday was a stressful day,” the Algeria winger said at his official unveiling.

“My agent told me about the Viola, I immediately said ‘yes’ and then I just waited for the two clubs to reach an agreement.

“When it was reached, I breathed a sigh of relief. I’m a technical player, I like to get past my man and dribble.

“I feel comfortable starting from the right, even if I’m left footed. I hope I can give my best to help Fiorentina.

“My year at Leicester was a complicated one, so when a historic and mythical club like Fiorentina called me, I took a chance that I didn’t want to miss out on.”

The 27-year-old is preceded in Italy by older brother Abdelkader, who played for the likes of Siena, Bari and Parma, and is joined at the Artemio Franchi by fellow wide man Franck Ribery…

“We’re lucky to have someone like Franck on the team. He helps everyone, both on and off the field.

“Ribery, for any French player, is a role model. Like many of us, he started from scratch, starting out with his local team. With commitment and hard work, he got to the highest level.

“Serie A is back in the limelight, with great players and great teams. For me, it’s on part with the Premier League and La Liga.

“My brother confirmed the Viola were a great opportunity for me, and the game against Juve after the international break will be truly super.”
