German referee Daniel Siebert has been assigned to officiate the first leg of the Champions League Round of 16 tie between Juventus and Villarreal.

The fixture kicks off at the Estadio de la Ceramica on Tuesday at 20.00 GMT.

This is the first leg of the Round of 16 and UEFA have announced the referee will be Siebert of Germany.

He is assisted by fellow countrymen Jan Seidel, Rafael Foltyn and fourth official Sven Jablonski.

The VAR is also from Germany, Bastian Dankert, assisted by Harm Osmers.

Siebert is a 37-year-old referee from Berlin who most recently officiated the FIFA Arab Cup Final in December 2021, which saw Algeria beat Tunisia 2-0 in extra time.

This will be his fourth Champions League match of the season, after Inter’s 1-0 home defeat to Real Madrid and Atalanta’s 3-3 draw with Young Boys, along with a controversial Liverpool 3-2 victory away to Atletico Madrid, which saw Antoine Griezmann sent off.

His record with Italian sides is six wins, two draws and only one defeat, Inter falling 1-0 to Real Madrid in September 2021.

Siebert officiated just one Juventus match, their 2-1 Champions League group win over Ferencvaros in November 2020.

Villarreal have already crossed paths with Siebert twice, both in the Europa League. They had a 3-3 thriller away to Spartak Moscow in October 2018 and won 1-0 at Dinamo Zagreb in April 2021’s quarter-final.

They received a penalty in both of those fixtures.

Siebert’s record with Spanish teams at club and international level is five wins, two draws and five defeats.
