Genoa’s tight loss to Milan has bought Shevchenko more time

Andriy Shevchenko’s time with Genoa seemed to be up but the close loss to Milan yesterday has secured his immediate-future.

The Rossoblu currently sit 19th in the Serie A table after 21 games, five points behind 17th place Venezia. The Ukrainian took over as head coach back in early November and has overseen three draws and six losses in the league, with a cup win over Salernitana his only success to date with the Ligurian club.

Gianluca Di Marzio reported last night that Genoa were re-considering dismissing Shevchenko following the decent performance in the 3-1 loss to Milan. The change to a 4-3-3 system looked good and the new signings Kelvin Yeboah, Silvan Hefti and Leo Östigard all played well.

It would be disingenuous to suggest that Shevchenko’s position in the Ligurian capital is now secure, but he’ll still be on the sidelines for Genoa’s match against Fiorentina on Monday and he can still fight to save his job.
