Incredibly, there are reports Genoa are trying to bring back Davide Ballardini, though Diego Lopez is flying in to replace Thiago Motta.

It had been assumed since Saturday morning that Thiago Motta would be sacked, even before the 4-0 defeat to Inter.

He only took over on October 22, overseeing two wins, three draws and five defeats.

The announcement of a dismissal hasn’t come yet and there are growing reports it’s because President Enrico Preziosi is unconvinced by Lopez’s credentials.

He spent most of his management career in Italy with Cagliari, Bologna and Palermo, but had until this month been at the helm of Penarol in Uruguay.

The alternative could be – incredibly – Ballardini, a man who has already been on the Genoa bench three times and who was fired most recently in October 2018.

That had to be the last time in this bizarre on-off relationship, because Preziosi gave several interviews heaping insults upon Ballardini, calling him “a terrible coach who just doesn’t know how to put his players on the pitch. He can’t do anything.”

Understandably, La Gazzetta dello Sport claim Ballardini wants a public apology from Preziosi before he’ll return to Genoa, but that doesn’t seem to be forthcoming.

As a last resort, Genoa could recall Andreazzoli, the coach who started this season and lasted just nine competitive matches, resulting in two wins, two draws and five defeats.
